Still Separate, Still Unequal Quotes

Quotes

“Many Americans who live far from major cities and who have no firsthand knowledge of the realities to be found in urban public schools seem to have a vague impression on racial isolation” (Kozol 41).

“In 48 percent of high schools in the nation’s 100 largest districts, which are those in which the highest concentration of blacks and Hispanic students tend to be enrolled, less than half will graduate in four years”(Kozol 54).

“The social- class designation of each of the four schools will be identified, and the income occupation and other relevant available social characteristics of the student and their parents will be described” (Anyon).

"The examples of schoolwork suggest characteristics of education in each social setting that appear to have theoretical and social significance and to be worth investigation in a larger number of schools"(Anyon).

These quotes all relate to the emerging idea that success is directly linked to ones social class. These quotes are from both Jean Anyon and Jonathan Kozol's articles supporting that statement. The concepts of success, education and social class all have a direct correlation to one another. One’s social class dictates their level of education which influences how successful he or she may become. Given the opportunity and experience allows for exponential growth further leading to success in the future. These quotes connect the ideas of racial isolation within education and the results that come from it. Such has the difficulty to succeed and as well as the challenges that one may face.

Identity Response

ENGL 1100
Identity Response

After considering our new understanding of identity and how Anzaldua identified herself through her language, a way that I can identify myself is through my behavior. My behavior can be identified through rituals or habits that’s may be observed by other people. This may include, being active, spending time with friends or family and trying new things. I try to go to the gym every day, eat healthy and stay in shape this is something that is important to me and plays a part in who I am as a person. Going to the gym is a ritual that I have and can be witnessed by others, this is a part of my identity. My mom and sister are the center of my life and mean the most to me. The way am when I am with is my family is different than anyone else, this behavior shows a different side of my identity, I am not a soft nor emotional person yet I would do anything for either one of them. One’s behavior can tell a lot about them in deeper ways than another may expect. Spending time with my friends, being motivated and trying new things are rituals or behaviors that also shape my identity. I enjoy starting my day off early and also live by the saying “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” you only have one life so you must make the best of it. There is so much to experience and do in the world I don’t understand how one can just sit around. If any of these behaviors were taken away from me, it would totally change the person I am. These aspects of myself are all aspects that I would be willing to fight for as they make me, me and different from others.

"How to Tame a Wild Tongue"

ENGL 1100
Reading Response Questions

1. the opening scene of Anzaldua in the dentist's chair connects to the overall message of the essay because the dentist is trying to use the cotton to prevent her from talking or moving her tongue. The overall theme is how her language was taken from her and the dentist was doing the same.

2. I thought that Anzaldua's use of Spanish throughout the text was very unique. By doing this she brought attention and recognition to her language that was devalued. It also makes people who only speak English step out of their comfort zone as she often had to do.

3. Our academic English would be considered standard Spanish in their county. Standard would be considered as the original form and non standard would be considered any other variation of the language.

4. In many cases speaking or writing in English has become a part of many peoples identity. From this you can form predictions on where they may be from. However, it may be a necessity for those who solely speak English to communicate in that way. As for the Spanish speaking population many have conformed to learn our language, therefore making neither Spanish nor English a necessity.

5. Various types of English identities could be as simple as using slang or to the point of living in different regions of the country in which the dialect varies.

6. No I do not use secret language or identity to communicate with my friends.

7. The type of English I speak when talking to my friends and the type I speak when speaking with someone of authority is much different. With my friends my English is much for laid back and casual and when with someone older or a parent I am much more reserved and use more standard English.

8. "I am my language" means that your language shapes part of who you are as a person. It can also tell a lot about you. This connects to identity as language can help others to know where one comes from and what kind of environments influenced them.

9. The introduction and conclusion relate because in the introduction the Dentist is trying to get Anzaldua to give up her speech and not move her tongue but in the conclusion the Chicanos say that even though other races have given up their tongue, they refuse to do so.

10. I do feel that the language I speak is a part of my identity as it allows me to communicate with people I love and care about and provides some information about me to those I do not yet know.

11. To me identity is important because I feel like you who you are and what your made up of entails your identity. I also feel it is important for Abzaldua to have identity as a Chicana, this is something that she lives for and states they will not give up their language.

Getting to Know You

1. I do not currently play a sport however I used to play basketball and volleyball up until my sophomore year in high school. After that I became the stat girl for the boys wrestling team for the next 3 years.

2. Something that I am passionate about and do in my free time is workout and stay healthy, I try to make it to the gym everyday. I also spend much free time with my family and friends who are also extremely important to me.

3. I have never told a lie, is the most ridiculous lie I have ever told.

4. When I write, for me, it is difficult for the words to just flow onto the paper. I usually start with and outline of three major points I want to discuss and three important details within those points. This gives me something to work off of while I try to get my thoughts across.

5. Learning how to write a thesis, how to structure a formal essay with an intro 3 body paragraphs and a conclusion, and including important facts within the body paragraphs is the extent of what I have learned throughout my writing experience. What I hope to learn from this course is how to make an essay unique and stand out from others by approaching it from different ways.

6. To be honest, I cant remember the last book that I have read a book cover to cover.

7. I rarely use twitter and facebook, as for snap chat and instagram, I am on everyday.

8. I think what is most important for me to learn this semester is how to convey my thoughts into a well written quality paper as well as the proper way to structure each paragraph.

9. My definition of identity is who you are as a person, as well as the people, things and experiences that shapes them.

10. A problem that is important to me is drinking and driving. I think may young adults take this topic to lightly and do not realize how dangerous it truly is. In my high school I was a part of the every fifteen minutes program. This was an interactive program through the school which tries to educate the students on the dangers of drinking and driving. Every fifteen minutes someone is killed by a drunk driver, to simulate this as student would be pulled out of class, have their obituary that was written by their parents read and then return to class with their face painted white where they could no longer talk to anyone for the rest of the day. For me this was an eye opening experience as my parents had to be involved as well as having to write a final goodbye letter to my mom. Although at the end of the day I still went home to my family it puts life into perspective and how precious it truly is.

11. I would sat that I am a B writer. I know how to convey my thoughts and form a proper paper but I do not feel that I am at that higher level yet.
